Welcome to the official website of the 5th Annual UK Geocaching Mega Event!

The UK's largest geocaching event continued its tour of the United Kingdom, and it came to North West England for the first time in the summer of 2012.

The first "Country Fair" styled Mega Event in the UK

The event was held at Cartmel Racecourse, South Lakeland, Cumbria on Saturday 11th August 2012.

Geocachers from all around the globe descended on Cartmel Park for 11 glorious days of Camping and Geocaching, with the Mega Event being the star attraction, bringing 1559 people into Cartmel Racecourse for the first "Country Fair" styled Mega Event in the UK.  Even though we went up against the London Olympics, we still managed to bring together the largest gathering of Geocachers in the UK to date.

We are pleased to announce that thanks to the generosity of Geocachers all across the country, our hard working fundraising saw the event pay for itself, with a small surplus left over of £1798.42, which is being divided up as follows.

  • £500 to the Seach & Rescue Dog Association (England)
  • £250 to Cartmel Village (as a thank you for allowing us to invade their wonderful corner of the countryside)
  • The remaining £1048.42 going into a "startup fund" for all the future Annual Summer Mega Events to use to kickstart their own fundraising.

We also have a small number of unsold Geocoins, which are all being sold off at events and through online vendors, all proceeds going to Charities such as Children in Need.

Every year the Annual Summer Mega is held by a different group of people, keen to showcase the "Best of British" in their area.  With the events getting bigger and bigger year on year, raising the kind of money needed to keep the events free to attend is a big task.  The Mega2012 team were very fortunate to have a team that worked well together, raising the funds over the course of just under three years.

The startup fund is now there to give future committees a bit of cash to get a series of Geocoins minted, or put down a deposit on a venue.  They'll be expected to pay back what they borrow with no interest, but they may wish to add to the startup fund once their event is over.

Further information on the startup fund will be available at a later date.
